Founded in 1929 as a radio orchestra and officially established in 1954, Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava has grown into one of the Czech Republic’s leading orchestras. Its repertoire spans works by Czech composers like Janáček, Dvořák and Smetana, alongside Mahler, Shostakovich and modern pieces. JFO collaborates with world-class soloists and performs in top venues across Europe and Asia, including the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Vienna Musikverein. The orchestra maintains a strong educational mission through its International Orchestral Academy for young musicians and frequently records for major labels, winning awards such as the Diapason d’Or. With around 100 musicians, JFO combines tradition with innovation and is preparing to move into a new world-class concert hall designed by Steven Holl.
